Have courage for the great sorrows of life
and patience for the small ones;
and when you have laboriously
accomplished your daily task,
go to sleep in peace.
God is awake.

Charities/Services-> Poverty & Social Justice

ACORN is the nation's largest community organization of low and moderate income families, working together for social justice and stronger communities. ACORN's accomplishments include successful campaigns for better housing, schools, neighborhood safety, health care, job conditions, and more.
We are an autonomous, non-partisan charitable society. Though we strive to work cooperatively with other groups, we are unaffiliated with any other organization or political group including the Toronto-based Canadian Civil Liberties Association. Our independence has been one of the BCCLA's enduring strengths for over 40 years.
Our Mission
BC PIAC is a legal advocacy organization which advances the interests of low-income and residential consumers in the regulation and deregulation of services. We are also concerned with advancing the interests of disadvantaged groups in obtaining access to justice and equality before the law.
The Elizabeth Fry Society works with women and youth in conflict with the law. We provide housing, support and counselling for women, children and youth to help them improve their lives. Our programs and services help build healthy and safe communities for all. Our goal is to provide women and youth at risk with the tangible resources they need to rebuild a life for themselves and their children.

Building an on-line community
PovNet is an online resource for advocates, people on welfare, and community groups and individuals involved in anti-poverty work. It provides up-to-date information about resources in British Columbia and Canada. PovNet links to current anti-poverty issues and also provides links to other anti-poverty organizations and resources in Canada and internationally.

The objective of the pro bono program is to bring together lawyers and the poor in order to eliminate barriers to justice.
Vancouver, BC
Quest feeds 15,000 homeless and hungry people in the Lower Mainland each month. We collect good food that businesses would otherwise send to landfills and serve the food as hot sit-down meals in Vancouver's Downtown Eastside, and also distribute it to over 70 social service agencies.
"Celebrating Small Victories Since 1961"
Today, in the poorest urban area of Canada, we strive to provide support for people who face the multiple challenges of poverty, crime, chronic mental and other illnesses, IV drug use, illiteracy, homelessness and the sex trade.
Our Mission
"To strengthen our community's capacity to address social issues. United Way has a 75-year history of helping people in the Lower Mainland. We began as a federated fundraiser - today United Way of the Lower Mainland plays a leadership role in bringing together resources to care for the social service needs of the community. We support the delivery of more than 400 programs and services that help people find their way."
