Position: Outreach Worker, Mobile Mission Van (Full-Time) Location: Union Gospel Mission, Vancouver BC Hours: Tuesday - Saturday, 8:00 pm to 4:00 am
Duties & Responsibilities
The Union Gospel Mobile Mission is UGM's newest tool for reaching those in need. The fully outfitted Dodge Sprinter van will navigate through the streets of Vancouver, providing help and assistance in the form of clothing, bedding, meals, referrals and more. As the Outreach worker responsible for the Mobile Mission, you will:
• Stock and restock, order materials, clean and maintain vehicle for each evening's readiness and duties. • Drive into allies, parks, and back-roads, with the purpose of making deliberate contact with those in need. • Minister in the aforementioned areas during any and all weather conditions. • Meet needs of the individuals that are being contacted in practical ways by supplying clothing, bedding, hygiene products, food and drink along with specific seasonal items such as rain ponchos in the winter and sunscreen in the summer. • Network within the Metro Vancouver area to ensure that we are up to date on the ever-changing communities needs. • Train and oversee staff and volunteers specifically for the Mobile Mission. • Maintain specific logs relating to the Mobile Mission such as, inventory, number of client contacts and locations.
Objectives
• By lifestyle and word, model a Christian example. To actively encourage people to explore Christianity. • To disciple new believers and, whenever possible facilitate their involvement in a local church. • As a member of the Chaplaincy/Outreach Team, you will provide support as well as referral services to clients of the Chapel from Vancouver's Downtown Eastside. • You will assist in the development of, and the running of effective programs and services that target the people of the Downtown Eastside. • You will assist with special events as required.
Knowledge & Qualifications
• Personal knowledge and experience of the saving work of Jesus Christ. • Class 5 driver's license required (must be valid and in good standing), Class 4 preferred. Current ICBC drivers abstract is required. • Knowledge and agreement of the Union Gospel Mission- Mission Statement and Statement of Faith. • Understanding of the importance of a high level of confidentiality within the organization and its clientele. • Experience working in a community organization, foundation or ministry. • Experience dealing with complex matters. • 2-3 years of related work experience is required. • Candidate must have post-secondary education in related fields.
Skills and Abilities
• Strong organizing and coordinating skills. • Strong interpersonal skills. • Excellent written and verbal communication skills. • Computer knowledge and skills are required for a PC operating system and software, including, Microsoft Office/Outlook, Word, Excel and experience with a database systems is essential. • Ability to work independently under the direction of Senior Chaplain, identify and solve problems and follow through on initiatives. • Work as a team member.

As an Outreach Worker you will
• Model Christ through word and deed. • Provide support to all guests/clients that visit UGM. • Build strong relationships with guests/clients. • Counsel up to the level of personal expertise and refer as necessary. • Meet and encourage guests/clients in the neighborhood and inform them of the services offered at the Mission and other agencies. • Recommend and assist guests/clients in finding suitable safe accommodation. • Provide support, on behalf of guests/clients, to external services. • Refer women and children to the Women and Family Associate Chaplain/Outreach Workers. • Coordinate with volunteers in your area. • Maintain peace • Liaise with other service agencies in the area.
As a member of the Outreach Team, you will also...
• Oversee that equipment is functioning properly. • Maintain an accurate record of statistics as well as important information on guests/clients for future reference. • Observe proper procedure for donations received. • Plan specific projects, programs and initiate activities under the supervision of the Senior Chaplain. • Ensure the smooth functioning of the Mobile Mission Vehicle and report any need for maintenance to the
Maintenance Dept.
• Participate in staff meetings, training and development opportunities. • Provide support and training to staff, summer workers and volunteers under the direction of Senior Chaplain. • Assist with the Mission's extracurricular activities if required.
