“Treatment is a great beginning but aftercare determines how you finish”

Angels’ aftercare & wellness program started in 2008 in defence of the many treatment centres that often found themselves in the breach of slanderous and untrue statements such as “successful recovery rates are only around 20% for treatment centres”.  The problem doesn’t lie with the treatment centres although none, like people are perfect.  We have some of the best in the world right here in Canada and the USA.
 
Recovery requires a plan, a long term plan!

It’s time we stopped thinking in terms of 30, 42, 60 or 90 day treatment centre stays (or fixes).  We need to plan long term with a series of stops along the way.  Together we must conquer the stigma of addiction that defeats many.  Recovery is good news!  Like any business professional or athlete, we need to train for this new way of living.  It takes time and it can get exciting and very rewarding!

So where is the problem?  Just who is responsible for life after treatment?

The problem lies primarily in aftercare and the solution lies with us, each one us.  This includes the client, the treatment centre programs, the pre and post-treatment counsellors, the immediate family including the workplace and finally the providers of new and healthy thinking and balanced living, the service providers.  We must step out of our box and together take new and stronger roles in planning and activating recovery.

Each of us can do better, much better.

Whether it starts with detox, an addictions or family doctor, a counsellor or at a treatment centre, we need to start thinking long term and as a team.  I like the example of a relay team, each running a bit with the next until the baton is passed.  We also win or lose as a team, as the client crosses the finish line we are all winners.  Should he/she stumble and fall…  Together we get to run again!

Normally you may think of yourself as a fine restaurant, a fitness trainer, travel agent or a movie theatre. Your gift may be in aromatherapy seducing the senses or a chiropractor working the body just to name a few.  In fact when it comes to good health, changing thinking and creating balanced living, you are in the life changing and even life saving business.   That’s how important you are to the individual & family in recovery.

It’s up to us in the recovery and healthcare fields to invite you to join us.  We are a dedicated and caring bunch who needs some balance and new thinking as well.  Come to think about it, we may be of service to you or yours someday too.  Welcome!
