| | Addiction Counselling
for the Individual and the Workplace Addiction and/or substance abuse is considered a “family" disease and like in the family home can and will affect the corporate family as well. At crossroads we consider the whole person as well as the family, both personal and corporate.
Overcoming denial
For a number of reasons, employees and individuals who are owners alike can be reluctant to “come out" and get the needed help for their problem. Shame and fear from losing a job to losing an entire company drives individuals deeper and can keep them in their addiction often till maximum damage is done. Enabling often disguised as caring seems innocent enough yet can be the main culprit in preventing the person from admitting the truth and seeking help before even more destruction. “If you even suspect a person has a substance abuse problem, chances are… The Recovery Process
We do recognize that the recovery process looks different for everyone. Our goal is to meet the client where they are at on the road to recovery and provide the tools that they need to move further along this continuum.
Crossroads has worked with a full variety of distinct employers and employees from every size and walk of life. Crossroads understands the value of the family both personal and corporate in recovery and has a family program offering education, encouragement and support.
Crossroads offers counselling and psychotherapy on an outpatient basis. Clients receive counselling around their addiction and underlying issues such as grief, abuse, trauma, and mental health. Family members looking for their own counselling around the impact of addiction and their own ability to draw boundaries have found benefit in this service as well.
Why Outpatient Addiction Counselling
• For some people, the option of going to residential treatment does not fit into their life. • For others, outpatient addiction counselling will be enough for them to explore their addiction while continuing to function in their lives. • Those coming to our 28-day residential program may wish to supplement their group treatment with individual counselling. • Often times clients want to continue with one-on-one counselling after they leave residential treatment (whether here or somewhere else) as part of their aftercare.
Addiction Counselling Services
• First time visit to help determine plan and course of action • Treatment and Recovery planning • One-on-One counselling • Family & Workplace counselling • Recovery Monitoring • Continuing Care program • Workplace reintegration • Addiction Residential Treatment placement and referral if needed • Detoxification if required

Education and Policy Development Inpatient - Outpatient - Aftercare SOMEONE "HITTING BOTTOM" HURTS THE "BOTTOM LINE" Recent studies indicate that 76% of illicit drug users, 81% of adult binge drinkers, and 80% of heavy drinkers are employed. Do you suspect that one of your employees struggles with substance abuse? Individuals that struggle with addiction problems will go to extreme lengths to hide their problem from their employer. If you suspect a problem... then there is a problem. Substance abuse by an employee can mean poor productivity, absenteeism, accidents and expensive retraining if employee is terminated. Helping an employee with time off and/or financial assistance for treatment is a far less expensive endeavour than termination or costly accidents. Research also indicates that if an employer is involved with the individual's addiction recovery there is a 95% recovery rate. We at EDGEWOOD Vancouver Addiction Services have worked a number of companies in assessing their policies and procedures concerning substance misuse in the workplace. We understand the legal, union and medical issues involved in developing a workplace policy that is fair and cost effective. If you care, get involved and EDGEWOOD Vancouver Addiction Services will help: - Workplace drug and alcohol policy development

Candace Plattor can assist you in creating a healthier working environment by offering expert, support and guidance for your private counselling practice or organization.
Working in a counselling capacity raises many issues, concerns, and problems that are often not present in other occupations.
Some of these are:
1. Confidentiality
Ethical issues may make it difficult for you to talk to friends and acquaintances about your work with your clients. This can cause you to feel isolated from other people in your life. In addition, if there is no one you can safely confide in, you may often be left alone with the difficult feelings your counselling work can bring up for you.
2. Expanding Your Expertise
To be an effective counsellor, you need to stay on top of current trends and approaches. Moreover, in order to decrease any feelings of self-doubt you might have as a therapist, you will want to continue to develop your clinical skill set when working with clients. This allows you to have more skill-based choices, which not only increases your professional confidence but also provides higher quality service to your clients.
3. Counter transference
Understanding the intense reactions that you may have with clients is essential in providing the most valuable therapy. As your Clinical Supervisor, I can help you become aware of your “hidden? reactions to clients, allowing you to shift into healthier and more strategic responses. As well, I can help you “stay curious? about the wonderful phenomenon known as counselling. Being curious about learning and growing is a skill you can then teach your clients to use in a variety of situations in their own lives.
As your Clinical Supervisor, I provide a secure and confidential venue for you to explore thoughts, feelings and reactions about your work, assisting you to become a more effective counsellor. You will hone your existing skills, learn new tools, increase your confidence, and heighten your level of self-care in order to overcome personal obstacles that are getting in the way of providing the best possible service to your clients.
Some areas of focus might include:
• Stress Management and Self-Care: how to listen to other people’s problems all day and not burn out • Assertiveness: maintaining healthy boundaries with clients and colleagues • Identifying and resolving unhelpful personal triggers and counter-transference with clients • Learning New Skills: tips and techniques • Professional self-development, career planning and goal-setting • Maintaining professional ethics and accountability

Jackie Maclean MH. CHt Welcome to The Power Within Hypnotherapy…
What Is Hypnosis?
There is nothing "magical" about hypnosis; Hypnosis is simply an altered state and happens when you are relaxed… almost daydreaming. It is merely a relaxed state of focused attention. By temporarily bypassing your conscious mind, your critical faculties are suspended and you are now open to accepting suggestions. When suggestions are accepted at a subconscious level, you are empowered to make behavioural changes at a deeper level than when you attempt to make changes at the conscious/intellectual level.
How Does Hypnosis Differ from Meditation?
Meditation is a discipline that takes steady practice over a long period of time. The practice involves clearing one’s mind over long periods of time by allowing thoughts to pass by while focusing on a point, a mantra, or some other focus. Often breathing exercises accompany this practice.
A goal of meditation is to detach from your thoughts, and to experience a deep awareness that your thoughts are not you.
One important thing to know about meditation is that it is "content-less." There is no goal aside from the meditation itself. It can lead to many health benefits, including stress relief and peace of mind, but it is not goal-driven.
Hypnosis, on the other hand, is a state of focused attention where the conscious mind is distracted so that work can be done with the subconscious mind directly.
In short, the difference between hypnosis and meditation is that they both bridge the subconscious / conscious interface, with meditation being without content and not goal-driven, while hypnosis has content and is goal-driven. “Hypnosis helps a person create the behaviours that lead to the goals they set for themselves." Coaching Intervention
The help of an intervention professional can be invaluable to a family trying to get their loved one into a substance abuse treatment center. Intervention is a method of presenting the reality of an addict's behavior and the harm it is causing in a non-judgmental, respectful and caring way. A successful intervention helps the addict understand the destructive nature of their substance abuse and become willing to accept treatment. The Orchard works with a number of interventionists in Vancouver, Toronto, Calgary and Seattle, and we have a network of contacts throughout North America who can help us recommend a caring professional in your community. When obtaining an intervention referral, there is no obligation for you to use The Orchard's drug treatment center; the interventionist is not obligated to recommend our facility, nor do we receive compensation for referring the interventionist. Our chief concern is that an individual finds the facility that offers them the best chance for recovery. Pre-Admission Coaching The Orchard considers pre-admission coaching an important part of supporting the family when an addict will neither seek nor accept help. Our expert coaches can explain the nature of substance abuse and the addicted personality; provide insight into the progression of the disease; and refer you to groups offering support for the family and friends of addicts. The Orchard drug and alcohol treatment center is committed to an active pre-admission process and our staff ensures the transition into our facility is as seamless as possible for the family and the client. Our pre-admission coaches will answer your questions and ease your fears as they help you develop a plan of action in your time of crisis. Transportation The Orchard drug treatment center is easily accessible by car and is approximately 40 minutes from downtown Vancouver, British Columbia, and three-and-a-half hours from Seattle, Washington. We welcome clients from across Canada, the United States and around the world and will arrange a pick-up at Vancouver International Airport or the Bowen Island ferry terminal. | | Vancouver Island, BC SOLUTIONS FOR THE WORKPLACE! Every year workplaces, often unknowingly, pay an enormous cost as a result of the misuse and abuse of alcohol, legal and illegal drugs, and gambling addictions by employees or their family members. Cedars offers a comprehensive package of services, working with employers and unions before, during, and after the primary treatment program to ensure the most successful outcome for everyone. BEFORE TREATMENT
Coaching Support: So often when an employee is suspected of having a substance abuse problem, the workplace has difficulty making the move from “knowing something should be done"to “doing something."The staff at Cedars has a wealth of experience working with employers and unions coaching workplace personnel on how to best handle the challenges that substance abuse and gambling addiction can pose for the worksite. If required, we can arrange for a third-party professional to facilitate an intervention process to get someone assessed and into treatment. Assessments: We believe the client should participate in a comprehensive assessment that considers the medical, psychological, emotional, and spiritual aspects of the individual. This may be done in the community before the client comes to treatment. If not, it can be done at Cedars on arrival. An individualized treatment plan will be designed based on the assessment.
Detoxification: Cedars has the capability to undertake detoxification if required. Our medical staff specializes in addiction medicine and will ensure the patient’s safety during the detoxification process. Admissions: We work directly with an employer or union representative to facilitate the process of getting the client into the treatment centre as quickly and efficiently as possible. PRIMARY TREATMENT
The multi-disciplinary inpatient treatment program at Cedars is based on an abstinence model that operates on the premise that people with addiction disorders can be successfully treated; and that a full recovery is probable when given appropriate care. During treatment we consult with the client’s referral agent on an ongoing basis. Before leaving treatment we ensure a well constructed aftercare strategy for 24-60 months post treatment is in place for the client. For further details please refer to the brochure on primary treatment. AFTER TREATMENT
Workplace Reintegration: A well-designed, monitored return-to-work strategy is often the difference between success and failure for employees returning to work after treatment. We will work with the employer and/or union to craft an appropriate document that outlines the expectations for the client. We can also line up a substance abuse professional in the community to assist the workplace in monitoring the agreement.
