Job Summary:
STV Counsellors provide counselling and related support to adult women who have experienced violence in their relationships, sexual assault, and childhood abuse. Services are also provided to young women under the age of 19 if they are living an adult lifestyle. Counsellors also plan, implement and oversee the day-to-day activities of the program.Services are provided from a feminist and trauma-based perspective in accordance with STV Program Standards, STV Best Practices, and SWC policies and procedures.

Responsibilities:
  • Provide individual counselling for adult women survivors of violence.
  • Provide one-to-one counselling for adult women survivors of childhood abuse, sexual assault and/or violence in intimate relationships.
  • Maintain accurate up-to-date records, including documentation of all client contacts, referrals to and consultation with community agencies and professionals.
  • Facilitate program processes to enhance communication and support effective team development.
  • Promote community awareness of SWC, its services and issues related to violence against women.
  • Consult, network and liaise with community agencies and professionals to maintain up-to-date information on available resources, maintain positive community relations and build mutually beneficial partnerships.

    Qualifications:
  • Degree/diploma in related human/social service field or a combination of education, training and experience. (Masters preferred.)
  • Demonstrated experience providing crisis intervention, short-term and longer term counselling for women survivors of violence in relationships, sexual assault, and childhood abuse from a feminist and trauma-based perspective.
  • Feminist and trauma-based analysis of violence against women and children and knowledge of harm-reduction models.
  • Extensive knowledge of appropriate community resources.
  • Demonstrated ability to work with diverse clientele and cultural competency.
  • Demonstrated ability to multi-task, and exercise creative problem-solving.
  • Demonstrated ability to work independently and as a part of team.
  • Excellent interpersonal, communication and conflict resolution skills.
  • Excellent computer and administrative skills.
  • Clear criminal records check.
  • Feminist and trauma-based group facilitation experience is an asset.
