Youth “Bounce Back” Program

A NEW EDUCATIONAL PROGRAM
 - Specifically designed to help children ages 7-12!!

With the support and training from the Betty Ford Treatment Centre in California, EDGEWOOD is excited to be the first treatment centre in Canada to launch this Educational Support Program for children ages 7-12.  We believe that many people throughout British Columbia and abroad may benefit from knowing that there is a program designed to help support children and break the cycle of addiction.

A Perfect Family?
- Maybe not...but every child has the right to thrive.

All families are unique, and all have their share of problems. Some have money issues or unemployment in the family, some are coping with conflict, others may be in the process of divorce. Addiction is a family problem too, and for children of parents struggling with substance abuse, family life is a world of perpetual chaos, uncertainty and confusion.

As generally happens when the primary focus for the family is on the behaviour of the addicted person, a child’s basic need for love, support and emotional nurturing gets minimized or ignored all together. For such a child, daily life can mean struggling to cope with disappointment, stress and embarrassment. They learn to avoid speaking and thinking about a subject that brings so much upset and turmoil to their family. With no way to express their feelings, these children can feel isolated and they begin to internalize their feelings of guilt, anxiety, confusion, anger and even depression.

Breaking the Cycle
- Isn’t this what you would want for your child?

Happily it is possible for children to overcome these effects and to develop the emotional strength and resiliency they need to restore balance in their lives. They need to know they are not the cause and they cannot stop it. It is also important for them know that while they may feel they are the only ones are dealing with this type of situation, they are not alone.

Each child is unique. Our professionals recognize the special problems and needs of children in families struggling with substance abuse. Our priority is to help them develop skills and resources they will need to meet the emotional challenges they face.

Breaking the cycle through our “Bounce Back” group program can make it all possible.
Group participation helps to reduce feelings of isolation, shame and guilt while capitalizing on peer support. Children who cope best with the trauma of growing up in a family affected by alcoholism or drug abuse have often received support from non-alcoholic adults and teachers.

Serious & Fun
- The good news of recovery, it can be fun & it works!

As the most vulnerable among us, children of substance abusing parents need to know there is a help for them. Healing for children begins with trust, and understanding that their parent’s behaviour is not their fault.

EDGEWOOD’s Bounce Back program provides a fun environment where children who are living with addiction in the family can explore and express their feelings freely. Through games, role-play, videos, art projects, songs and group discussions, children develop a sense of belonging, feel less isolated and learn to understand their experience and where to turn for help.

Edgewood offers ongoing 3 day, 6 session therapeutic programs starting July 16-18 & August 20-22, 2010 - continuing on a regular basis to fill each demand.
